Devblog #3: The Jetpack Update

Much like the Wright Brothers before us, we have flight…spaceflight

Patch 0.2.15 adds Jetpacks, better zombie/slime/cuddler diseases, Bioshrooms, and crops now require light. Also loadouts, goolerium tanks, and dead body harvesting.

Full Patch Notes: Here

But Prove It Though

Here’s a brief video where I cover this patch:

Jetpacks

Colonists now fly around the map. (death to walkways)

Flying makes it so much easier to explore the map, expand your base, and collect Electro Jellies

Who puts a Kat plushie on an asteroid?

Electro Jellies, Alien Prisms, and most Bots can fly.

Note: Right now, all colonists always have a jetpack. In the future, I’m thinking that you’ll start with 3 jetpacks, as equipment, and you’ll be able to craft more.

Lifeform Diseases

Slimes, Cuddlers, and Zombies could already infect your colonists, but it used an old system (the perk system). This was extra confusing because there was separately a “disease” system (added later).

Often your colonists would become “infected” by a Zombie, but the disease interface would say “colonist not sick, dude”

Now, lifeforms infect colonists with a disease rather than a perk.

  • Zombie Disease: Infected colonists are bald (never trust). Periodic vomiting. Lasts forever. Infected colonists are not attacked by zombies.

  • Slime Disease: Infected colonists are ginger. Lasts until cured. Colonists poop out goolerium and orange slimes. Slimes will not instigate fights against infected colonists.

  • Cuddler Disease: Infected colonist is albino. Cuddlers will not instigate fights against infected colonists.

Note: Because these are now diseases, colonists can only be infected with one at a time.

Bioshroom

The Bioshroom creates Biomass out of only a seed and water. This crop is available immediately from the start.

All starting seeds are replaced with Bioshroom Spores

Hulk Anatomy

This change makes farming easier to get started, and helps the player feed their colony using only starting supplies (seed + water) and no research or power required.

Note: Crops now require light to grow, but not the Bioshroom, because it’s an emo mushroom

Loadout

There are many relics in the game, such as:

  • Speedy Shoes: Increases movement speed

  • Remote Uplink: Colonist is teleported back to base instead of dying (enchanted diamond amulet)

  • Tyson Gloves: Increases attack damage (stacks)

Relics are fun, but it was cumbersome to assign them to colonists. So we added a “loadout” UI. Assign any item to your colonists and they’ll automatically find and store it during free-time (when they’re not working).

That’s one stinky Alex

Food and healing items can also be assigned

Note: In the future, we’ll use this User Interface (UI) and system to assign weapons and gear to colonists. (with some modifications)

Goolerium Tank

We already have tanks for storing Water, Fuel, and Biomass.

Now we have one for storing Goolerium.

What even is “center”

When using the tank, your colonists can craft medical and chemical items much faster.

Dead Body (and Purple Mushroom) Harvesting

If (when) a colonist dies, you must extract the head and then deposit the head into your core. Previously, you had to perform this operation manually, but now you can click on a dead body and mark it for “harvest”. Doing so will queue up any colonist assigned “Doctor” to harvest the head and return it to your core (the colonist must be at least level 5 to do so)

We added the same functionality for harvesting purple mushrooms, except it uses a farmer. Also, farmers skilled enough to harvest purple mushrooms will no longer take damage from purple mushrooms.

That’s It

That’s the big stuff in patch 0.2.15! Next patch we’ll be adding a galaxy map and trade ships (very hype). You can check it out on the earlier_access branch on steam

As always, don’t forget to check out the stream on Fridays!

And leave a review on steam! (plz)

Thanks for reading! It’s still summer (in my hemisphere), so go out and have fun!
